BRAND STRATEGY | IDENTITY SYSTEM DESIGN

Challenge

Rebrand a market-leading Southern African aviation ground school, separating them from their old brand and emphasising their expertise in the theoretical side of a pilot's training.

Scope

  • Brand strategy

  • Identity system design

  • Copywriting

  • Signage design

  • Merchandise design

  • Social content creation

Results

The new brand identity was enthusiastically received by employees and students alike, with the new positioning helping the Infinite Aviation brand to go from strength to strength.

Context

Infinite Aviation is a female-owned, market-leading ground school across Southern Africa, specialising in all aviation-related subjects.

With the core belief that safer pilots make for safer skies, the ground school specialises in educating pilots to become analytical thinking crew members who know why and how the theory applies in the context of the aviation environment.

Opportunity

When I was approached by Megan Stevenson, CEO, founder and director of Infinite Aviation, to help rebrand her ground school, I had to jump at the opportunity. As an 80's baby who grew up watching Top Gun and Iron Eagle, I've always wanted to design brands in the aviation space. It was a no-brainer!

Megan wanted a clear separation from her old brand, and wanted the new direction to be far more slick, innovative and professional.

Goal

We set out to create a logo and brand identity system which emphasises that Infinite Aviation is a ground school offering practically useful knowledge for real-world flight situations, producing thinking – and therefore safer – pilots.

Solution

Morphing the letters I and A into the shape of an aeroplane wing, and combining them with the graphic of a pencil taking off, effectively spoke to both the aviational and educational aspects of the brand. Extra points for spotting the paper plane!

Identity system

With the IA icon at its core, the brand asset pack was expanded to include multiple logo options in a variety of colour-ways, for application on varied backgrounds. By stepping and repeating the icon, and then offsetting rows along the axis of the letter "I", a striking and elegant brand pattern was developed.

Below we can see how the various elements come to life across a multitude of touchpoints, from vehicle branding to stationery, online presence, and even on a jumbo jet. One can only hope!
